This begins by following the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) through a lava field\, with a short respite through the woods before a steep climb ascending soft\, loamy cinder and battling the frequent mountain-top winds. \nBelknap Crater has great views up and down the Cascades. An America the Beautiful National Parks pass will also work.\nAt least two liters of water and electrolytes per person.\nSnacks.\nAppropriate clothing / layers\n\nPOST HIKE\nDee Wright Observatory is worth a look if you haven’t been there before (we pass by it coming and going). You have the option to join us after the hike at The Barn in Sisters for lunch. \nNOTE: This trail requires an online permit reservation. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice
DESCRIPTION:June 21st marks the solstice and the beginning of Summer. It’s the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours. And it marks the start of peak adventure time (pun intended). \nSnow is beginning to melt out on mountains that have been covered all spring. The longer days mean you can sneak in a hike after work. And it’s the perfect time to tackle the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge. \nIf you are just getting started\, here are a few proposed schedules to help you complete the challenge. \nSome of the challenges experience a change in weather and the possibility of snow in October. If you’re tackling a challenge in one of these areas\, plan to hike two of the peaks each month (July\, August and September). This gives you a buffer against shoulder season weather and flexibility to bag that final peak before the challenge ends. \nChallenges in some of the warmer zones run through the end of December. You can hike one peak a month through the end of the year and complete the challenge. And of course\, some of you will go bold and look to finish the challenge in six weeks\, or even six days. We’ve had a few challenges complete the challenge in even shorter times (<48 hours\, though I wouldn’t recommend it). \nThey key is to gather your hiking buddies\, sit down with your calendar and plan your hikes. Give yourself some flexibility so you can adjust when life gets in the way. \nAnd don’t forget to share those epic sunrise and sunset shots!

SUMMARY:Tom\, Dick & Harry Group Hike - Central Oregon
DESCRIPTION:This is an 8 mile hike with some easy scrambling near the ridge. The trail starts at Government Camp and passes by beautiful Mirror Lake — the perfect spot for a reflected photo of Mount Hood. We climb a total of 1\,700′ — most of that through forest until we pop out at the first viewpoint. \nFrom there\, the trail becomes scant. We will decide as a group whether to continue on the final 1/2 mile to the true high point based on current trail conditions. Trail description on AllTrails. \nThis hike is part of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge. \nAs of May 10th\, there is still snowpack the last mile\, so bring trekking poles and microspikes if you have them. I’ll update in the comments as conditions change (and likely improve). \nI’ll be driving up Friday night and camping the night before and we will meet at the trailhead at 9am for introductions. We will hit the trail by 9:15. \nAfterwards\, join us for lunch at Mount Hood Brewing in Government Camp. \nThis is roughly a 2-hour drive from Bend\, so bear this in mind and consider carpooling (coordinate in the comments). The trailhead parking area is pretty big and it’s paved (no gravel roads to drive on this one). \nRSVP here to join us.

SUMMARY:Trail Mix Tuesday: Intro to Wanderlog\, My Fave Roadtripping Resource
DESCRIPTION:I’m going to be demonstrating a tool called Wanderlog which has become my favorite tool for planning roadtrips. I used it for my Utah roadtrip to the Mighty 5 in April\, and it’s part of my planning for our Colorado trip in July. I’ll be walking through how to use both the website and the app to make your road trips even better. \nHere’s the link to the livestream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7d4hLYs3LU\nRemember\, this goes live at 6:30 PM Pacific Time on Tuesday\, May 20th. \nNote\, we’re trying something new this week — streaming live to YouTube. Please join and leave a comment on how you like that platform.

SUMMARY:Black Butte (the long way) - Central Oregon Six-Pack
DESCRIPTION:We are headed back to Black Butte\, this time taking the longer route from the Lower Trailhead. Unlike the hike from the Upper Trailhead\, this hike hike is a strenuous climb with over 3\,000 vertical feet. The total mileage comes in right around 10 miles\, making this a great way to train for bigger hikes. The trailhead is easier to access with a short (<.25 mile) gravel road to the parking. \nWe are meeting up at 7:30 AM\, will hit the trail by 7:45 AM. Last time I hiked this I was on the trail for almost 5.5 hours (with a nice long break at the summit). \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks\, sun protection and layers appropriate for the weather. There is currently snow as you near the top\, so microspikes and trekking poles may be useful (we will know more as the date draws closer). \nAfterwards\, you are welcome to join us at The Barn for lunch (opens at noon) or explore the town of Sisters on your own. \nThis hike is part of the Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge\, and I will have information to share and can answer any questions about the challenge as we hike. You can also check out recent trip reports from other challengers to get a sense of current trail conditions on Black Butte.

SUMMARY:Black Butte Group Hike - Central Oregon Six-Pack
DESCRIPTION:We like big buttes and we cannot lie! And Black Butte is a beaut! This symmetrical cone-shaped butte is home to an active fire lookout tower\, as well as a historic cupola that you can easily imagine must have been the coolest summer digs ever\, with spectacular views of Mt Washington\, The Sisters and beyond. \nThis moderate hike starts at the upper trailhead (which doesn’t require a high clearance vehicle\, but is a six-mile gravel road with some washboard sections). We will climb 1\,443 vertical feet over roughly four miles (two up and two down). Check out our detailed trail guide for the specifics. \nMeet at the trailhead at 8:00 and begin hiking at 8:15. \nBring 1-2 liters of water\, snacks\, sun protection and layers appropriate for the weather. There is currently snow as you near the top\, so microspikes and trekking poles may be useful (we will know more as the date draws closer). \nAfterwards\, you are welcome to join us at Three Creeks Brewing for lunch (opens at noon) or explore the town of Sisters on your own. \nThis hike is part of the Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge\, and I will have information to share and can answer any questions about the challenge as we hike. You can also check out recent trip reports from other challengers to get a sense of current trail conditions on Black Butte. \nFriendly dogs are allowed; I will be bringing my two labradoodles Farley and Lucy. \nThis is not a fast-paced hike. Our goal is to enjoy the views (which if the weather cooperates\, are awesome).

SUMMARY:Sutton Mountain Group Hike - Central Oregon Six-Pack
DESCRIPTION:Sutton Mountain is a remote beauty near the tiny town of Mitchell\, Oregon and the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. \nThis moderate hike is a steady climb to the high-point of Sutton Mountain. We will climb 1\,600 vertical feet over 3.5 miles to the 4\,692′ summit\, then retrace our steps to the trailhead for a total of 7 miles over 3-4 hours (get our detailed trail guide). \nOur plan is to meet arrive at the trailhead at 8:00am and begin hiking at 8:15am. The trailhead is not marked\, so follow the driving directions in the detailed guide linked above. It’s about a 90-minute drive from Bend. \nBring 1-2 liters of water\, snacks\, sun protection\, and layers. The trail offers little shade or protection from the wind. \nAfterwards\, we are headed to Mitchell and Tiger Town Brewing for lunch and a cold beverage (maybe the namesake Sutton Mountain IPA?). After lunch we head home\, or take an optional side trip to the Painted Hills. \nThis hike is the first in the Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge — we will have info and can answer any questions you have about the challenge at the hike. You can check out recent trip reports from other challengers to get a feel for the hike. \nFriendly dogs are allowed; I will be bringing my two labradoodles Farley and Lucy\, and the last two times I’ve hiked this I’ve been joined by the local ranch dog\, Patch 2.0 who hiked all the way up and back with us (sort of a “trail ambassador”). \nLeave a comment below so we know you’re coming. Note that there is no cell service at the trailhead\, so be sure to input the directions into your map app before you head out. The turn off to the parking area is not signed and easy to miss. SUMMARY:Bay Area 6 Peak Challenge Mt. Sizer
DESCRIPTION:Come join me in bagging my 6th peak of the Bay Area 6 Peak and Ocean to Peak Challenges!\nThis will be a HARD 15-16 mile hike that will be rewarding.\nWe will be starting at 8am sharp! Don’t be late. We will not wait.\nPack plenty of water\, food\, and dress for the weather!\nUse the directions below linked to the map.\nParking is $8 cash or pay by park app.\nI will have a Zoom meeting to discuss the hike and answer any questions on Thursday 4/10 at 7pm. Mark yourself as going for a link to the meeting. You do not have to attend the meeting to hike.\nLink to map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/mt-sizer-hike-39016cf\nIf you are having trouble viewing the may through Facebook look for me on All Trails\, follow me\, and find my maps. That seems to work.\nFull disclosure I am NOT a professional guide or leader. Please consider your ability\, skill\, and endurance no matter how good you think you are. Fatigue\, dehydration\, etc. can happen to anyone. EVERY hiker is responsible for THEIR own safety\, directions\, and pace they hike. EVERY hiker is responsible for themselves for everything that happens to them on the trail. This is a self paced hike. We don’t always stay together and are not obligated to. I create hikes on All Trails and invite everyone to join me. We laugh\, make fun of ourselves\, take lots of pictures\, and have a good time. This is your hike to enjoy!\nI always start on time. I have an OCD complex about starting on time. I do not wait\, sorry. I blame my father for this. You can ask me about it on the trail.\nPlease message me if you have any questions.\nHope to see you all there

SUMMARY:El Cajon Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Summit: 6513 ft\nDistance: 11 miles out and back\nElevation Gain: 3\,566 feet\nTime is approximately 5 to 6 hours\nDifficulty: “Very Difficult” Not a beginner hike!\nPace: Moderate. We will try to stay together as a group\, but if there is a wide range of paces\, we will split into sub-groups.\nSweep: Probably not\, so make sure you’re familiar with the trail if your pace is less than average. \nConsidered to be one of the hardest hikes in the San Diego area\, the hike through Wildcat Canyon to El Cajon Mountain features severe ascents and descents across various scenery. The trail gradually climbs towards the summit\, descending into valleys and climbing high peaks. While you hike\, take in the breathtaking surroundings. You will know you are almost at the top when you come across the deserted\, rusting jeep. From this point\, the trail gives dramatic views of El Capitan Reservoir. The trail narrows as you approach a saddle and winds through boulder fields and dense chaparral vegetation. When reaching the summit\, you are rewarded with 360-degree vistas of the surrounding peaks\, lakes\, and the far-off metropolis of San Diego. Rising above the community of El Cajon\, El Cajon Mountain is the highest point on a sizable granite block that provides sweeping views of the other peaks\, which include Mt. Gower\, Mt. Woodson\, and Iron Mountain. \nWhat to Bring:\nShoes with good traction\, hiking poles (optional)\, snack.\nBring plenty of water and be prepared for sudden weather changes. Bring layers!!!\nDogs are permitted as long as they are leashed.

SUMMARY:Hot Springs Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is an opportunity to hike Hot Springs Mountain — one of the six peaks in the San Diego Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge. \nSummit: 6513 ft.\nDistance: 9.8 miles out and back.\nElevation Gain: 2\,401 feet.\nTime: approximately 6 hours.\nDifficulty: “Difficult” Not a beginner hike!\nPace: Moderate or slower\, think tortoise! We plan to stay together as a group. One of us will function as the sweep. \nHot Springs Mountain\, the highest point in San Diego County at 6\,535 feet\, would be worth hiking just for that fact\, but there’s so much more to enjoy. After a tough initial climb\, the trail is peaceful and scenic as it winds through conifers\, giving the feel of a higher alpine area. And at the summit\, you get to visit the oldest standing fire tower serving Cleveland National Forest\, dating to 1942\, and then enjoy a ladder climb up to the actual summit. It’s a fun and beautiful hike that’s tough but not too tough. \n\nThis hike is on the Los Coyotes Reservation\, a remote and peaceful part of eastern San Diego County. \n**There is a $11 per person cash only charge to enter at the entrance or click here to pay in advance. \nWhat to Bring:\nShoes with good traction\, hiking poles (optional\, but recommended)\, snack. Bring plenty of water and be prepared for sudden weather changes. Bring layers!!! \nLet us know if you have any questions; BTW: we have no assurance that we will have cell service on this hike.\nEmil 202-812-8990\nMarsha 619-855-0669 \nDownload the hike map: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hot-springs-mountain-trail

At 1\,592 feet\, Cowles Mountain is the highest point within the City of San Diego. \nPlease be on time – we leave promptly at 6:05 pm\, so arrive early if you need time to prep. \nDo NOT follow your map if it takes you to Rainswept Ln. We start at the dead-end of Lake Murray Blvd. and take the Mesa Road\, meet up with the service road\, and proceed up to Cowles Summit. This is an out and back hike and should take about 2-2.5 hours. \nHikers of all levels are welcome; however\, the average pace of the group is moderate.\nIf you hike at a slower pace you might have to hike on your own until we scoop you up on our way down.\nWe typically regroup at the first two intersections and then spread out till the summit.
