SUMMARY:Group Hike up Black Butte
DESCRIPTION:We are headed back to Black Butte\, this time taking the longer route from the Lower Trailhead. Unlike the hike from the Upper Trailhead\, this hike hike is a strenuous climb with over 3\,000 vertical feet. The total mileage comes in right around 10 miles\, making this a great way to train for bigger hikes. And the trailhead is easier to access with a short (<.25 mile) gravel road to the parking. \nWe are meeting up at 7:30 AM\, will hit the trail by 7:45 AM. Last time I hiked this I was on the trail for almost 5.5 hours (with a nice long break at the summit). \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks\, sun protection and layers appropriate for the weather. There is currently snow as you near the top\, so microspikes and trekking poles may be useful (we will know more as the date draws closer). \nAfterwards\, you are welcome to join us at Three Creeks Brewing for lunch (opens at noon) or explore the town of Sisters on your own. \nThis hike is part of the Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge\, and I will have information to share and can answer any questions about the challenge as we hike. You can also check out recent trip reports from other challengers to get a sense of current trail conditions on Black Butte. \nThis hike was reschedule from the original date (March 4). \nRSVP at the website link below (via Bend Hiking Meetup).

SUMMARY:Level Up Your Hike Planning
DESCRIPTION:Anyone attempting and of the hikes in any of the Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge Series should be able to plan a successful day hike. SUMMARY:Group Hike up Sutton Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Sutton Mountain is a remote beauty near the tiny town of Mitchell\, Oregon and the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. Depending on the weather between now and then\, there may be snow. The trail is mild\, but microspikes might be helpful depending on the amount of snow and ice. \nThis moderate hike is a steady climb to the high-point of Sutton Mountain. We will climb 1\,600 vertical feet over 3.5 miles to the 4\,692′ summit\, then retrace our steps to the trailhead for a total of 7 miles over 3-4 hours (get our detailed trail guide). \nOur plan is to meet arrive at the trailhead at 8:00am and begin hiking at 8:15am. The trailhead is not marked\, so follow the driving directions in the detailed guide linked above. It’s about a 90-minute drive from Bend. \nBring 1-2 liters of water\, snacks\, sun protection\, and layers. The trail offers little shade or protection from the wind. \nAfterwards\, we are headed to Mitchell and Tiger Town Brewing for lunch and a cold beverage (maybe the namesake Sutton Mountain IPA?).\nAfter lunch we head home\, or take an optional side trip to the Painted Hills. \nThis hike is the first in the 2023 Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge — we will have info and can answer any questions you have about the challenge at the hike. You can check out recent trip reports from other challengers to get a feel for the hike. \nFriendly dogs are allowed; I will be bringing my two labradoodles Farley and Lucy\, and the last two times I’ve hiked this I’ve been joined by the local ranch dog\, Patch 2.0 who hiked all the way up and back with us (sort of a “trail ambassador”). \nRSVP at the event link below (with Bend Hiking Meetup) so we know you’re coming. Note that there is no cell service at the trailhead\, so be sure to input the directions into your map app before you head out. The turn off to the parking area is not signed and easy to miss. There is a wire fence/gate that needs to be opened to drive into the parking area.

SUMMARY:Hiking in the Snow or Winter Mountaineering
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, tragedy strikes in the mountains when snow covers the trails.  The accidents are unfortunate\, but not surprising. What in the dry\, warm months of summer might be a straightforward hike\, after snow falls can become full-on winter mountaineering. \nJoin us for this webinar with Kurt Wedberg\, founder of Sierra Mountaineering International in Bishop\, California. We’ll be talking about when a “hike in the snow” becomes winter mountaineering\, and what that means for gear\, knowledge and experience requirements. Learn basic techniques and hazard assessment that will help keep you safe (and know when to turn around). \nAs a bonus\, those who are looking at leveling up their skills will have an opportunity to save 10% on a Snow Travel School at SMI in Bishop. \nThe webinar is FREE\, but registration is required. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:FREE OUTSIDE Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:On August 28\, 2020\, mountain athlete Jeff “Legend” Garmire set out to break the unsupported Colorado Trail record. This meant he had to carry all his food and gear for the entire 490 miles\, and complete the trail faster than anyone ever had before. The goal was to cover over 50 miles daily and also capture the personal journey from Durango to Denver. \nThe idea of filming the record attempt was born out of a failed TV show\, which inspired Jeff and director Dylan Harris to take on the challenge together. They hired some of the crew that had worked on the previous show and in only two weeks\, had a strategy to capture something that had never been captured before. Jason Fitzpatrick\, the amazing director of “Mile Mile and a Half” came aboard to turn the epic footage into a spectacular showcase of what goes into an unsupported adventure. The grassroots and team effort brought about a studio-quality film through persistence\, passion\, and grit. \nNo film crew had ever captured an unsupported record before\, and it was done without having any contact with Jeff throughout the duration. Two stories of one record make “Free Outside” one of the most unique films ever made. \nJeff Garmire\, Dylan Harris and Jason Fitzpatrick will be on hand for Q&A after the screening.  \nOfficial Trailer\n \nAlso be sure to check out our interview with Jeff\, Dylan and Jason on the Almost There Adventure Podcast.
