San Gorgonio Peak

May 18th, 2019

3 take aways from this hike; and then some:

  1. From High Creek Camp (mile 5 out of 8) it was a challenge with the snow, I didn't want to put my crampons on just yet because it was patchy, I definetly put them on after the 7th mile.
  2. Gear, some people tried to summit (i dont know if they did) but they did so with no gear, no microspikes, no ice axe, no crampons. This is the highest peak in soCal, surely if other mountains have snow, this will have even more snow, I was a little worried about them trying, definitely recommend at the very minimum micro-spikes.
  3. Start early. i started at 5am, 1 hour before sunrise; a lot of people started at 7-8am, it was cloudy in the afternoon, that could be a problem given that this hike is 17miles and took me 9 hours.

Extra notes:

  • People camped at High Creek camp.
  • Two dogs were summiting haha
  • The last mile is the most challenging, the mile 1 is the second most challenging. Conserve your energy.
  • A lot of people hiked, I went alone, I didn't feel alone. I think like 20-30+ people summited today, crazy
  • It is going to snow tomorrow, the ranger said he expects snow at the 5,000 elevation, so take my notes with caution considering I did this before the rainy week.

Personal note: I have completed the 12 soCal hikes! I would like to dedicate my achievement to those with Autism, including my beautiful sister. My sister is my motivation and inspiration for these hikes and I could not have done it without her unconditional love, love you Krystal!
