Before this hike, my hiking buddy and had summited a total of 13 peaks.  We completed the SoCal challenge last year and took it on again this year with 2 in the bag already this year (Sitton Peak and Mt. Wilson).  Flatiron was the last of the six pack for winter Arizona.  We started out fairly early and got to the park just as it was opening, the weather was cooler than the day before on Wasson Peak and as we hiked towards the peak we stayed in the shade of the mountain before us.  The first mile is rather easy and a nice steady incline.  The next mile + is steep and rocky and must be carefully navigated.  There was some smooth faced rocks and we were on all fours climbing to the next plateau.  Once there we sat on a rock, looking up at the very steep next phase of this hike.  We watched as several hikers were seriously challenged by sharp incline, one couple in particular seemed to be frozen on the side of the mountain, attempting to go further then attempting to come back down and not successfully doing either.  We later learned one of the hikers was afraid of heights.  As we sat there we discussed the possibility of not getting to the peak, considering the idea that we may not have the skill level to complete this particular mountain's challenging terrain.  After about 20 minutes we decided to go back down the trail.  It was the perfect decision and I have no regrets.  Sometimes the best decision is the smartest decision.  I'm still proud of all that we've accomplished these last 4 months.
