Baden Powell from Dawson Saddle

Trailhead:

Dawson Saddle

Type of Hike:

Day hike

Trail Conditions:

Minor obstacles posing few problems

ROAD:

Road suitable for all vehicles

Bugs:

Bugs were not too bad

Snow:

Snowfields to cross – could be difficult

Started the day as just a quick fitness hike up to Smith Peak tryin g to save my old legs for Baldy Friday, but felt good and continued up to Baden Powell.  The trail is pretty good now with just 3 trees down which are easy to navigate and quite a few snow dams that could pose problems early when snow is still hard but probably gone by the end of next week.  They have trails through and around them so no worries.  Also the through hikers on PCT have ribboned shortcuts which were obviously necessary during the heavy snow, but now are burned in trails straight up and over every ridge from Baden Powell to Dawson Peak.  We made it up in about an Hour and a half and the dog took a nice long break laying in the snow.  It is probably getting too hot for him and he will not be joining me on Friday to do San Antonio.  Practiced some glissades in the remaining snow which was prevalent on the North side only.  The bugs are starting to come out but not too bad so far.  This is a fun hike and while mileage wise a bit longer it is not just the grinding switchbacks we did in April with the heavy snow.
