July 5. Beautiful day. Robert Walter and I (the usual suspects) looped from Baldy Bowl across the Devil's Backbone. There was some very sparse snow near the top. We found a couple wrecked airplanes at about 9,000 feet. The talk around the trail is that they were military Hell Cats from WW2 who had their altimeters set wrong and crashed into the side of the mountain during a snow storm and never saw the mountain. We spent an hour exploring the wreckage. Total trip took over nine hours (including our wreckage detour). We stopped for a break at the summit and took a few pictures. We encountered the Devil's Backbone on the way down (after the summit). It was very much over-hyped–not scary at all. Having said that, I would not want to attempt it when it is covered with snow. We stopped at the ski lodge for refreshments before descending back to our trucks. We walked along the road that winds around with the ski lift that took us back to our trucks. Overall, the hike worth it. I want to do this hike again.

I don’t like how my photo displays. I would rather have a landscape as the featured photo but the other photos would not upload. I hope to be able to add the other photos and replace the featured photo. 🙂
