I missed the Baldybowl trail turn-off and ended up taking the dirt road up to the ski lift notch, which was fine, since it was pretty soft underfoot, but by the time I got up onto Harwood Mountain, the sand was heating up!  And needless to say, it was like exactly high noon!  Honestly, being a New Yorker, I wasn't ready for the full force of the SoCal sun, so I had to hide under a lodgepole pine tree for a few minutes to catch my breath and drink some water.  Made a couple of shade stops actually.  Now there were great views up top, and western tiger swallowtails fluttering about.  But Harwood-Baldy-West Baldy are covered in sharp-edged gravel which felt like metavolcanic or roof pendant fragments in the High Sierra — no fun!  By the time I got to West Baldy, my feet had had enough so it was shoes back on for the descent.

In any case, the score is #1 for the SoCal sixpack barefoot edition, and #528 in terms of lifetime mountains climbed barefoot.

If you drive up to Mt. Wilson and step out onto the parking lot, would that count for the SoCal Sixpack (asking for a friend who only has a few days left in town)
