Avalanche danger

We Camped at the skyhut the night before to get an early start at the bowl.

snow conditions to the hut were decieving, easy enough for anyone with converse and microspikes to forget about the dangers of Mount Baldy.

We geared up, hardshells, gloves, helmets, harnesses, ropes, iceaxe and crampons

We started early and ascended up the bowl . We had a lot of rock and ice falling down the chute due to the hard winds at the top. Right about 3/4 of the way up, I got struck by a chunk of ice that I never saw comming. It threw me down qnd was able to self arrest, I was winded, my chest hurt like hell, then on the far right of the bowl, we saw someone slide and tumble down. There were a few mountaineers near the accident and they rushed for the fallen climber.

I felt good enough to finish climbing the bowl and get out of danger t ok assess my injury. I the top, I decided to push to the summit, which was reached by 2pm

Very windy and frozen rain at the top. We did a fast descend and reached the skyhut again. at this moment. the fallen climber had just been taken then on a stretcher. the hellicopter had not being able to return due to high winds.

Temperatures were dropping so I pulled my jet boil and warmed water bottles to try and keep the climber warm. The climber had about 3 cardiac arrest. after about an hour she was probounced dead.

Speaking to several witneses all said the same thing, she had no iceaxe and was wearing microspikes at the bowl.

One of the responding sheriff medics gave us a PSA, “Everyone I rescue here or dies is wearing microspikes”

The Baldy Bowl is not a hikers trail, it is a deadly mountaineering route and it will take your life if you disrespect it.

Please stay off the bowl unless you have the propper gear and training
