Trail snow-covered at times – Gear and expertise recommended

Hiked with 1 other person. Not many people on the trail past the falls, especially in the morning. Maybe saw 15 people on the trail proper. Getting back to the trailhead there were many people failing at social distancing – going to the falls, sledding (right next to the road), and the parking was nearly full (some people were getting tickets for sticking into the road.

________

We got on the trail at 8am. Only a few cars at the trailhead.

Snow started pretty quickly after the trail register – we stopped to put on microspikes. Taking the regular Ski Hut trail, spikes is all we needed.

Trail was well packed down, though off the trail things could get deeper and softer. Spikes were necessary, but crampons were not if you stayed on the regular trail (i.e. you don't try to go straight up the bowl).

2.5 hours to the top. It was fairly warm and sunny on the way up (I was stripped down to a tshirt), but at the top the winds picked up and the temp fell to below freezing. We put on some layers, took a couple photos, and quickly descended.

The snow was softening rapidly as we descended, making some sections difficult as the top few inches of snow would all slide together.  I was happy to be descending before things got any more sloppy.

That being said, conditions will have changed as a storm was coming in and was supposed to drop at least 5″ at the top.
