This was so much fun.  I really did not plan for a 12 mile hike, but that is what the GPS said.  Great trail, great views.  The kids had a great time.

We parked at the lower trailhead and it was just about 4 miles before we reached the upper trailhead parking lot.  It was a great spot to use the bathroom and have a snack before continuing to the top, which was about another 2 miles.  As we approached the top, the fog began to cover the summit, temps dropped and the wind picked up.  It was awesome, especially because we are new to Central Oregon and we always joke about how crazy the weather is.

Great first summit for me and my 9/11 kids.  We look forward to the next one, here we come Lookout Mountain.

  1. Hi! I was the woman you spoke with by the car and on the trail. I am doing the Challenge as well. I have done Black Butte a hundred times but never the whole thing from the bottom. My GPS said 10 miles! I will look for you on my next hike to Lookout!
