We got to the parking lot a bit before 7 and there were still plenty of spots available.  One of the advantages of hiking during the week.  It's a beautiful hike up the canyon with plenty of water flowing down the stream and lots of waterfalls.  The weather was very pleasant.  We saw many chipmunks, butterflies, and ladybugs!

Now to explain the hike title.  The last 100 yards or so are very steep on a trail that isn't exactly the best marked.  I couldn't believe that was the way we were supposed to go, so instead of heading almost straight up the hill, we took the trail to the left.  We walked along this pleasant trail for a while before we decided this was not the right way as it was moving away from the peak and slightly downhill.  So back we went!  Next time we should probably study the map a bit better before we start off.

I bet the view from the peak is spectacular.  For us, the valley was shrouded in clouds.  Still pretty awesome!

On the way back down we passed several groups backpacking up the mountain carrying camping gear.  In total, we probably saw only a few dozen other hikers.

Besides our little detour, the only other issue I had with this hike is the number of rocks.  I longed for a smooth dirt trail.  Being up there in age, I'm very concerned with the loose gravel and losing my footing and twisting an ankle or falling down.   It made for a slow descent.
