I named this hike “devil's in the details” because each map I looked up had different trails. Taking a picture of the map at the trailhead is the best way to go. That being said, this is one of my favorite trails in the area and it is well marked. It includes plenty of vistas from the two ridges and 5 peaks as well as several scrambling opportunities and different ways to start or finish the hike.

My hike started with a flock of turkeys running away from the rising sun. After stopping for some pictures I made my way to Mitchel Rock, then Eagles Peak, and then down and back up to Mt. Diablo. I took a look at my three maps and decided that the trail continued from the devil's pulpit to North peak. This was not the right way to go. After a tough scramble down a gravel chute trail I emerged to find a sign marking the gravel chute as “not a trail”…. [from Mt. Diablo make your way down to the parking lot to connect with the correct trail (N Peak Trail)]. After a couple of snacks and WTFs, I made it to North Peak then made my way to Mt. Olympia. That section can be rather tricky since the trail has a lot of loose rocks. One of my favorite parts of this hike is that at the end you can see the whole distance you have hiked and there is an undeniable sense of accomplishment while still enjoying wonderful views. I'm always happy to see my car, if for no other reason than I know I'll be back.
