As mentioned in the title, I didn't know this challenge existed until a few days ago. I frequent Barr Trail and the Incline and recently met a couple who were looking for the trail that leads to Rocky Mountain. I didn't know it was called that but knew where a trail was that lead to a “rocky” mountain top that was in the general vicinity of where they were looking. A week later, I was in the same exact area and met a woman who asked the same exact question. After giving her the same directions, I enquired more into what this challenge is about. Well, I am all about adventure, so I signed up and ran up to the peak today.

This trail can be a little hard to find/follow (several social trail spurs are around) but if you follow the directions for this hike, you should be ok. The spur trail is approximately .2 miles after the top of the incline and is unmarked. Just keep walking in a westward and inclined direction. The trail you're on will start to descend and bend to the left. It's after the bend that the spur trail will appear on the right. Climb this trail for approximately .3 miles and you'll come to another spur to the left. Take that left and it's only a quarter mile to the summit.

Hope you find it.

  1. Hi Todd!
I think my husband and I were the ones you gave directions to. Very much appreciated. Thank you! I believe we made the summit. However, we didn’t climb on top of the rocks so maybe we may have been shy a few feet.
Anyhow, great to see you on here!

  2. Hi Annette. You very welcome. I’m glad you found the summit. I was a little worried that my direction may not have been accurate. If you saw the rock with the board on it and the ladder below, you made it. I don’t think climbing to the top of the rock is actually necessary. Just a bonus.

I had only been to the summit once before (a week prior to see you). I remember you saying something about a challenge but I didn’t quite get all the information and basically forgot about it. After giving the same directions a few days later, I wanted to get the full story on this. What I (or someone) really needs to do is get this trail on the map (Gaia, Trail Run Project, and All Trails).

All the best on your challenge.

    Todd
