We arrived at the parking lot around 8am on a fresh Sunday morning. The weather forecast was for rain late morning and it was overcast. We thought and secretly hoped there might be a little dusting of snow at the summit. From Juniper campground we followed the Juniper to Eagle Peak Summit loop trail hiking clockwise. We were trying to finish the 8.81 mi hike in a little over 4 hours. There were four of us on the hike. The trail begins hiking across a Deer flat fire road and onto Meridian Ridge before picking up Eagle peak trail. The fire road hiking was easy, mostly downhill with a little elevation gain towards Eagle Peak trail. Eagle Peak is a neat little ~1m loop out and back and features some cool views of the surrounding area however it was pretty cloudy. We stopped for a quick snack and met some other hikers that had hiked up from the bottom at Clayton. From there we went onto the Diablo summit on the Bald Ridge trail which is a pretty short but gains a lot of elevation. It was a change of scenery on a single lane trail. The last part of the summit hike featured a few switchbacks on the N Peak Trail and then the push up to the summit was not too challenging. We made it up to the visitor center around 12:30pm then had lunch before a quick descent back to the Juniper campground which took a little under 30m. We were back in the cars by 1pm. We saw the next morning that there had been a light dusting of snow that evening. Bummed we missed it. I really enjoyed this hike, it was challenging in parts and offered a wide variety of different scenario and neat little well kept trails.
