The hike to Mt. Wilson via Sierra Madre Trailhead is very steep. Almost the entire hike is up hill with little leveled areas. About half the hike is shaded and the other half is exposed. Hiking poles are really helpful for this hike. This time of year you will see tons and tons of gnats. The moment you stop moving they will swarm all around you. They are an extreme nuisance. Mosquitos and bees were also present so come prepared.
There's a cafe at the top end of the hike that is open Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm. I recommend checking the hours beforehand because sometimes they do change their hours. The food is good and reasonably priced.
This hike also provides you with some great views from beginning to end. A great hike, but a challenging one. Worth it!
