On the day of this hike the trail was open, but I've since heard it's closed again. Call the ranger at Paso Picacho Campground to ask about status. We hiked up through Azalea Glen then down on the fire road. The paved fire road made the last bit of the climb pretty brutal and as we approached the summit it was very windy and rainy…by the time we made it back to the car we were soaked through.
Beautiful forest and enjoyed hiking in the rain, actually. No views due to the clouds/fog, but was a nice change of pace from hot summer hikes.
