Set off at about 5:30 a.m. to beat the heat. Some parts of the trail in the canyon at the beginning, the vegetation is mature and forms a tunnel over the trail. The canyon cliffs are amazing in the dawns light. We went to both overlooks extending the length to 11.8 miles but they were worth the effort. Saw several unprepared groups that day, one was inexperienced and spread out between both overlooks, and several others got a late start and had minimal water. Overall, it is a great hike and was a lot of fun.
