After a 5-6 mile off-road adventure in my little Lexus in the dark.. I arrived safely at the trailhead lot at 0515. I stayed put in my car for a bit to watch the sun light up the sky and listen to the silence. I started my hike at 0550. Along the way I saw fresh elk tracks. Thinking they should be near I never saw any but a couple hiking ahead of me said they saw them run down the hill. I heard an elk call which was really cool since I’ve never heard it before on a hike. I was first to summit Kendrick for the day at 0800. A lot of buzzing bugs at the peak so I quickly took in the scenery and booked it back down. Since it was a Saturday there were more people out. All very polite hikers. I completed back to my car at 0946. Another 5-6 miles out on the dirt road but all went exceptionally well and I loved every second of this day. Bathroom and tower are still closed due to covid. Weather was perfect and watching the sunrise on yet another early Flagstaff hike was breathtaking and a very pure and humbling feeling.
