After celebrating with the finishers of the Arizona Summer Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge on Saturday in Sedona, I travelled to Phoenix for a chance to get a start on my second year hiking the Arizona Winter challenge. I was hiking with our challenge ambassador, Richard (aka @foxtrax on Instagram).

We had both hiked it previously using the short-but-steep Trail 300, and were looking to make it a bit more challenging. So we started from the Dreamy Draw trailhead right at sunrise.

There are a network of trails leaving from Dreamy Draw, with lots of options. We chose to head for the saddle, which meant a climb, a descent, and another climb before connecting with Trail 300 en route to the summit. Lots of shade for most of this in the early morning.

Once we connected with Trail 300, there was a crowd up hikers. Before this, we saw only a handful of people. Hiked up to the summit, snapped the obligatory summit selfie and headed back down.

On our return, we took a trail that wound around the hills, closer to the freeway. Noisy, but at least we saw a different part of the park. You can see our route in the Strava link below.

One down, five to go!
