This was my first time doing an overnight hike for the Six Pack of Peaks challenge, and my first time doing an overnight hike at San Bernardino Peak. I've done this hike as a day hike twice before so I felt like I was pretty familiar with the trail, and the hike overall. We decided to start a little later than our usual hikes, but due to some delays, we ended up starting even later at about 11:30 pm. It felt very odd starting this late, since this is around the time we usually reach the peak. We expected to reach our camp spot in about 2-3 hours, and then make it to the peak in another 2 hours after that. We didn't account for the fact that the heavier packs would slow us down quite a bit. It took us about 4 hours to get to the camp spot at Columbine Springs, which is a half a mile off the main trail at about 5 miles in. It is another 3 miles to the peak from there. We set up our tents, while we debated to keep going and reach the peak the same day. After a good break before we finally decided to keep going to the peak, knowing we would be hiking back down in the dark for a good while. We made it to the peak just as the sun was beginning to set, at about 7:50 pm. We took a quick break, and had a quick snack, and started back down to the camp spot, as it was quickly beginning to get cold. The cold only lasted about half a mile as we headed down. The head lamps we took worked very well to give a good view of the trail, as most of the way back to camp was completely dark. We made it back to camp at about 10:30 pm, and were finally able to sit down and have a good rest. We had a few snacks, and a few beers, and pretty much celebrated that we finally were mostly done. The next morning we were about by around 7am, and promptly started packing up to head back down. We reached the trail head at about 11:30 am, and headed out for a group lunch.
