Trail snow-covered at times – Gear and expertise recommended

The trail had intermittent snow to start and then completely covered a little before the saddle. You absolutely must have crampons. The trail was nonexistent; only footsteps of previous hikers. If it wasn’t for having a map on our phone and having done the trail previously without snow, we wouldn’t have know how many times we were off the trail. There are so many footpaths it’s easy to think you’re going the correct way, except when the footpath is suddenly going straight up for miles (one clue that we were not on the trail). We ended up going past the peak and then doubling back after we summited. I have to admit we wanted to quit many times. Slipping constantly and never feeling stable when you step is a challenge that leaves you more sore and tired then you would have prepared for. Even so, it was fun! And we realized you can slide easier on your back down a mountain then on a sled.  We also saw and heard a rock slide/avalanche on the mountain facing us. Kind of a scary and awesome sound.
