Started the day in a traffic jam in the Cajon Pass all the way to the 210.  So much for my 0600 jump off.  Arrived and got on the trail by 0700.  Trail was the usual going up through Icehouse with a few bugs starting to make themselves known.  Having one of those days where I just seem tired and my hip flexors were bugging me.  When I finally reached the saddle I was a bit disappointed at my time, about 34 minute miles.  I headed toward Smith Camp and realized I was no longer hurting and made quick time to the camp.  This is where I made my first error wandering around looking for mountain goats ended up on the wrong trail heading west and then south straight up the first of three false peaks.  I knew where I was headed but plowed straight up to the first peak.  My watch and compass let me know I was early and in the wrong spot.  Plus having studied the pictures and proximity of peak I knew I had another 30 minutes west.  I decided to just scramble the other two peaks I could see and on the second I recognized Ontario.  I arrived and took a few pictures and then a fifteen minute power nap.  I then headed toward Big Horn Peak and talked to a few hikers who were also heading to this one.  It was a nice short but steep climb and I decided to eat my lunch here as the clouds gathered and even thundered once.  I headed back down and it was sooth sailing for the most part, a couple downfalls and a few rocks on the trail.  When I got back down near the stream in Icehouse the bugs were a lot more prevalent and I inhaled my first one of the season. Ha!  Soaked my feet in the Ice water right before reaching the parking lot.  In the end I had done 15 miles at a 28 minute pace with a 35 pound load.  Not bad but still not where I want to be. I'm finding at 56 getting my fitness up to where I want it is a much more creative endeavor than in my 40's.  Probably gonna do Baden Powell again to get warmed up for Baldy on Friday before fathers day.
