After 2 failed attempts from COVID and wildfires, I finally got to hike Mt Wilson. We started around 6am although the gates were surprisingly open at 530 when I arrived. We went clockwise when the loop split so that we could see the falls later in the afternoon when the sun rose and it got hotter. It was about 7 miles to the observatory with mixed shade and exposed terrain. About a few miles from the observatory, we missed a turn off and took a long roundabout route that put us outside the gates to the summit. Luckily someone let us in so be careful navigating that route. The way down was really pretty with mostly shade. If you go to the falls, it adds an extra half mile round trip but it was totally worth it. The falls were only a mere trickle but I set up my hammock between two trees and napped to the sound for a bit. Be aware the last half a mile is on exposed black top and a real killer after a 14 mile hike. Got back to my car sound 330 after taking our time and relaxing. On our way down to the falls we encountered a few pack miles bringing supplies to the campground which was cool. Sadly Mt Wilson closed 3 days later 🙁
