A brutal hike in the best and worst ways! It definitely challenged me both mentally and physically. It was my first hike that was over 12 miles so it was a great measuring stick to what I need to work on for my own personal goals.

Trekking poles are a must, proper footwear, and plenty of hydration. I carried a 3L hydration reservoir plus a 16oz bottle of water with a mix of amino energy powder. The first section of the trail is one of the gnarliest ascents + switchbacks with a pretty good elevation gain. The section through the forest (through Vivian Creek campground and Halfway Campground) was a welcome reprieve with a steadier less exerting incline that was actually rather peaceful and enjoyable. Once you reach and pass High Creek campground, the REAL fun begins. Be smarter than me and use your trekking poles. Your knees will thank you on the return trip. Once we reached the moon like terrain, that’s when the elevation change hit me more than anything. Fatigue set in and it was a real push to get to the summit. Once that summit comes into view though, it’s such a welcome relief!

Overall the trip took just under 11 hours (including breaks) and the way down felt twice was long but the feeling of accomplishment is unmatched.
