My son and I left the trail head at 6:00 AM, (parking was great-Thursday) Took the Manker Flat to devil backbone trail up and it was a nice gradual incline, until you pass the backbone, then the elevation gain really begins! I would say for me it was a little challenging and I had to take a couple of mini breaks to catch my breath along that portion of the trail. (being 51 yo-elevation and I don't really get along that well)  The weather was great with clear skies and mild wind which cooled the vibrant sunshine.  Great views of course, nice rest at the peak chatting with other hikers who came up the Baldy Bowl route which is definitely a more challenging way to go if you're up for that. We went down the baldy bowl trail and were thankful we chose not to go up this way. It is really steep the entire trail and trekking poles are def needed. Loose rocks and gravel force you to be mindful of every step as evidenced by a young guy that took a tumble in front of us and got cut up pretty badly.  I was wearing very good traction trail running shoes and slipped/fell twice thankfully just got a small cut to my palm. So, long story short: sunscreen, good shoes, trekking poles and you should be good to go.  I carried 2L hydration pack and it was a perfect amount for me, took my last sip just near the car.  Oh, and the only bugs I saw were in the outhouse style bathroom next to the parking lot. Tons of flies in there but thankful to have had it available.
