Was a little nervous with the heat coming in, checked summit conditions, although it was suppose to hit mid 80's, things should be good with an early start. Was hiking with a newbie, but I had stressed to spend two days prior hydrating. Arrived at Mankers Flats to park, happy to see the toilet at the trail head, instead of the old porta potty. Headed up the dirt road and San Antonio Falls was beautiful. Last time did Baldy Bowl, this time decided to do Devils Backbone trail, so up to Baldy Notch we headed. We stopped at the Notch restaurant to use restrooms, have a snack and hydrate. This is where it got a little confusing, there are at least 3 different trails to take from the notch. Seems like we went straight up the ski run, this was the trail in the middle, I advise against this trail, my quads felt like melting jello. I would still say, this was the hardest part of the entire hike. It was finally over and across Devils Backbone we go. The backbone was not as bad as I expected. About 5 miles in the trail splits, oops, I went right and should have stayed left. After about 100 yards realized the mistake, although I could have hit Mt Harwood and across to Baldy. That last 400 yards, nothing compared to that ski run. Got to the summit and could see for ever. There were black and white swallowtail butterflies enjoying the view with us. Enjoyed a well deserved lunch and started our decent. Just off the trail below the summit were a couple of patches of snow, couldn't resist a July snow angel. Stopped at the notch again to hydrate and our final decent to Manker Flats. Not going to lie, my feet hurt, no blisters but a lot of loose rock on the fire road irritated the balls of my feet. Was tempted to use the ski lift down from the notch, but knew I would be angry with myself later. I went through 3L of water and my hiking buddy, 1st time hiker, went through 5L.
