Hike Log

Mt. Wilson: Wonder & Woes

Trailhead:

Chantry Flats

Type of Hike:

Day hike

Trail Conditions:

Minor obstacles posing few problems

ROAD:

Road suitable for all vehicles

Bugs:

Bugs were not too bad

Snow:

Snow free

Several fallen trees (5 or so) along the trail due to winter snowfall and recent windstorms. They weren't hard to cross, and many have been cleared, so the trail should be completely clear in a few more days/weeks. There are also a few patches of snow at the summit but nothing on the trail itself.

The bugs got worse as the day got warmer (nothing to speak of at 6 AM but by 11 AM when it hit high 70s/early 80s the bugs started coming out). I definitely snorted at least 2 that flew into my nose (woe #1).

Summit was beautiful. The cafe is closed for the season but the pavilion was a great spot to get some rest and refuel (including a fill up of my water bottles). I did drop all my apple slices upon arrival (woe #2) so if anyone else on the summit saw that this afternoon… mystery solved. Quickly made my way to the marker for proof of my arrival and then started my way back.

The trail I took on the way down wasn't exactly the trail I had planned to take based on my research. I did bump into someone wearing the 2020 6POP shirt which was a lovely surprise. A little anxiety producing (woe #3) wondering if I was on the right track since signs are few and far between and a little tough on the knees (woe #4). If anyone has iffy knees I recommend bracing up both knees as an extra precaution.

Beautiful hike, glad to have my first peak under my belt, now spending the rest of the day in recovery mode. Heating pads everywhere.
