Big old Greyback or for us Aussies who struggled initially to pronounce Gorgonio, San G! Absolutely stunning trail and hike, another part of SoCal I was yet to experience first hand. The trail is full of all kinds of challenges and and beauty, which will make you want to constantly stop and take it all in, also while getting your breathe back. For my buddy Luke this was his second time over 10,000ft (the first being Baldy) and whilst he found it challenging – thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm slowly teaching him the art of altitude hiking as we prepare to summit Whitney in September.

We camped at High Creek Camp and while there was plenty of water at the time, it wouldn't be long before there is no water. So be mindful of that hiking in (and camping). Weather was beautiful to be honest. Our initial plan was to make camp and summit the following morning, but after encountering a couple of hikers on the trail and people repeatedly asking if we were camping at the summit (hindsight is a wonderful thing), we decided to make camp and then summit for sunset in the afternoon, totally worth it! The colours and the views late in the afternoon were sensational. It is well worth the being there around sunset.

The hike down in the dark was just as beautiful, avoid using headlamps and let your eyes gradually adjust. Our plan to summit in the afternoon made the following day so simple, with a quick downhill hike out the following morning. San Gorgonio is absolutely a hike I want to do again, upping the challenge to do it as a day hike.
