Hiking San G from the South Fork trail as an overnight trip is my new favorite route to this peak. Although I've only ever gone from Vivian Creek in the past. We camped at Fish Creek Saddle, which is a little over a mile passed Dry Lake because there were no permits available for Lodgepole campground. That last mile to the saddle is tough enough on its own, but the difficulty is increased by the fact that you need to carry additional water to this campground. However, the views and the increased solitude are totally worth the extra effort.
We hit the summit the following day and returned the way we came. This route is probably going to be my go to path in the future as the experience is incredibly satisfying. I highly recommend this route.
