We started in the dark and then, the rain came. It was a light, cold rain but it helped keep the bugs at bay. Just prior to the rain, bugs were flying towards my headlamp, striking my cheeks and forehead. So, the rain was welcomed. The trail from Angelus Oaks starts out with steep, rather long switchbacks that seem to run on forever. As the sun began to rise, the light unfolded softly showing what we had entered – a beautiful and peaceful land. The trail was in a great condition – packed dirt with some rocks for the majority; it narrowed as it traversed through the manzanita and other shrubbery; some sections near the peak were covered with flat rocks but nothing too difficult. It is also a very long trail. In fact, after the bench we expected to be at the peak fairly quickly but that wasn’t the case. It was a grind. Also, because of the weather, the only view we had was Big Bear Lake and even then, clouds flew by to obscure the lake while we were at the peak. Heading back down was a treat. The scenery, the quietness – this hike is so rejuvenating. We did hustle the last three miles down. We didn’t want to finish in the dark and we barely made it! Our wives picked us up. They had dinner and drinks waiting for us at the cabin we rented in Angelus Oaks. How lucky are we?!
