My husband Tom, and I started early and arrived at the Santa Anita Ave gates at 05:50 AM to find them locked and a KTLA Channel 5 van parked.  At 06:00 AM the gates were opened and drove up to Chantry Flats to be the first ones to park.  We geared up and off we went.  It was beautiful day to hike as the weather was cool and saw some beautiful wildflowers blooming.  We took a few breaks along the way and had a short rest at the bench before heading to the top.  We thought it was kind of strange that we didn't see anyone passing us up or coming down and assumed it was due to being a week day hike versus a weekend.  We hiked to the peak and had a little snack, refilled our water bottles with the ice cold water out of the spigot and found a nice visitor to snap a few pictures of us before heading back down.  He had driven to the peak.  We made it all the way down to the car and still not a sole to be seen except the llama in the fenced in area.  When we arrived at the parking the lot, a car approached us and told us the gates were locked today as there was a bear sighting.  Thus, that was the reason we had the whole mountain to ourselves!!
