Trail snow-covered at times – Gear and expertise recommended

With the recent rain and more coming in the forecast, we figured Sunday 11/24 might be the last “clear” day of the year to bag San G. Well it was a clear and beautiful day, sunny and no wind, but the patches of snow at the trailhead was a prelude.

We put on micro spikes by mile 3 as the trail and surrounding mountains were covered in snow. The trail itself was hard packed from foot traffic which made it icy in the morning and slippery in the afternoon. By high creek camp, the snow was powder. Post-holing was an issue past the ridge.

It took us 16 hours which we started & finished in the darkness. To be honest there were at least 100 times I seriously considered turning back but I needed to get ol’ greyback bagged to complete my OG 6POP so I forged on.
