It was a cold day but luckily only light breezes.  The weather forecast called for high wind warning so we were fortunate to have beat it.  Although it was cold we had down jackets and gloves and the temperature was very pleasant for a brisk hike.   We did the 321 challenge since we drove all the way out, may as well, right!  The hike starts out with a gradual climb to Mt Pinos is 2 miles.  This is a very easy hike.  After Mt Pinos, you reach the Tumamait Trailhead to Sawmill and Grouse Mountain.  The trail descends through a few switchbacks which are easy except parts of it were covered in ice but it wasn't bad if you were careful.  After the switchbacks, there is a much steeper drop before leveling off.  We never saw the side trail to Sawmill but knew we were at the point so headed up and noticed there was a trail.   You can't miss the peak with its towering rock tower.  Onward to Grouse Mountain.  Again there was a steep drop before leveling off and heading back up to Grouse mountain.   There are no signs for this side trail as well but the side trail was easier to see and someone made a duck at the junction.  Overall I loved this hike and one of my favorite of the 6 that I did.  It might be because of the lack of people.  After Pinos we had the mountains all to ourselves.
