I like Black Butte and I Cannot Lie - Congrats to Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenger Becky for summiting Black Butte on Sunday! She reports that there was snow for the last 1/4 mile, but no microspikes required. Of course, with the precipitation in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, that could change.

Congratulations to Central Oregon Six-Pack of Peaks Challenger Suzanne for logging the first hike up Black Crater for this year's challenge! She hiked it overnight, as the highway is still closed until 6/21.

Here's her trip report:

"Hiked in on the closed Makenzie Pass Highway 242 & camped at trailhead. Everything here is burned. Shared the road with lots of friendly road bikers. Camped in parking lot oasis (patch of unburned area in middle of gravel circle) as highway was closed (no cars) and everywhere else was burned. Hiked up to Dee Wright Observatory Saturday, then summited Black Crater Sunday. First 1.5 miles of trail were in remarkable condition given burn. Then lost trail to deep snow. Snowshoed up a steep climb to an amazing summit then glissaded and hiked down. Bring lots of water and sunscreen! FYI day use permits are available at trailhead but advance permits are needed for overnight stays via the Central Oregon Wilderness Permit system."
