We parked at the lot across the street from the candy store. Normally you have to buy a permit but the sign on the candy store says you don't need it during the shut down. Other than that and the bathrooms being closed, there is no other impact from the shut down. It's an easy hike until the last .3 miles or so which requires some scrambling. We encountered 2 horses and a few dogs but no wildlife. Everything was greener than we expected (from all the rain) and we could see snow on the mountaintop in the distance. Peak 1 done!
