After neglecting to read the Alltrails description and leaving the 4×4 truck at home for the sake of a smooth ride a better gas mileage it quickly became apparent that we might have to abort!  Apple maps tried to take us down a ‘shortcut' that proved impassable to a small 2WD SUV.  We backtracked and drove down the road a bit more and were re-routed past an airfield that appeared to be used only for occasional drug runs or crop dusters or maybe a combination thereof.  We blazed through sandy washes fishtailing our way along for a good stretch before finally reaching the trailhead.  It was a bit disconcerting to find that ours was only 1 of 2 non-4WD vehicles.  Off we went down the Quartz Peak trail!!

Not far along the trail we encountered a group of hikers who were heading out.  They reported it had taken them 6.5 H to complete the hike.  It was about 11:30 and we realized we'd need to make good time.

The hike itself was challenging but not grueling.  The majority was on a well defined trail until about 3/4 mile from the top.  We needed to use the GPS a few times and keep our bearing on the white peak to stay on the right track.  Finally, we made it and enjoyed the amazing views and spectacular marble-like mountain cap. We rested for a bit, scarfed down some nuts and protein bars and took stock of our water supply.  We were down to 3 bottles with two thirsty adults and one very thirsty and tired dog.  When my leg cramps set in, my wonderfully amazing partner came to the rescue with an electrolyte packet! Thank you, Christine!!

We arrived back at the SUV in about 5.5 hours total, with appx 3:50 of moving.  Not too bad and plenty of light to spare!  We were the LAST car in the parking lot, which made me a little nervous about the trip back out through the sand.  Fortunately, all worked out well and it was smooth sailing after a couple of wrong turns.  What a day!  Once again, a terrific and rewarding hike with fantastic companions!

On to #5!!!
