Started before sunrise at 6am from the trailhead. Pretty chilly in the morning but eventually got pretty warm. Pretty damp trail all along because of the snow activity this week. 2.5 miles from the trailhead is where we got our microspikes on. Spotty and fast melting snow traces all along. Small streams everywhere, some can be heard below the snow cover. 3 miles into the hike, the snow cover gets dense all through to the top. Met some overnight campers on our way who stayed in the Stone Hut near the peak. Little Round Valley campgrounds are completely submerged in snow making the toilets there inaccessible as well. The last lap from the valley to the peak was just straight up like ~1200 ft gain in like a mile due to the snow. The switchbacks in this part which generally help climb this part were all covered so it was a complete burn on the legs. Crampons might have been better here but spikes did the job. Great sense of accomplishment once at the top. Breathtaking views of snow capped San Gorgonio and Baldy, flat lands of Palm Springs and clouds below us. Took us almost 8 hours up. Beautiful weather to be there. Stayed there for 1.5 hrs soaking in the beauty. The way back was all slushy snow making it difficult to stay standing. Lots of falling and sliding down. Beautiful sunset on the way down. Took us just 3.5 hrs down back to the trailhead. 13 hours in total on the trail. Amazing hike !
