Made the hike up Sutton Mountain knowing it might rain off and on during the day. The trip had to be pre-planned so weather was a possibility. Dry enough on the way up with limited muddy sections on the trail. Hard burst of hail/rain mixed with snow after reaching summit and as we started our descent. Trail quickly became extremely muddy. Sticky mud caked on shoes making it a hard slog down the trail. Trail conditions changed really quickly with very little rain. Otherwise it was a nice day. Town of Mitchell was great. Descent food and great beverages at the Tiger Town Brewing and adorable place to stay at Painted Hills Vacation Rentals. Took side trip to Blue Basin for a short hike and around the scenic loop – along John Day River to Painted Hills.

  1. Sounds like the snow on the lower section of the trail is now gone (from when I hiked this last month). But that mud… we had some fun in that, too! Did they have the Sutton Mountain IPA at Tiger Town Brewing? They were out when we went.
