This hike was a lot of fun! My sister and I tackled it together. We were surprised by how dense the vegetation was at the beginning of the trail, in the canyon. However, this was a nice break from the sun! A lot of the trail was very exposed and hot. We first hiked to the Sedona overlook, then the North canyon overlook. We were told by other hikers that the views from the Sedona overlook were a lot better, but I think both were stunning in their own way. We were a little unnerved on the way back down when we saw some large bushes/trees moving off the trail. There were signs at the trailhead stating that bears had been spotted in the area. It definitely gave us a push to pick up the pace on the way back down. In the end, we made it back down unscathed. We later learned that Richard Wilson, for whom the mountain is named, was fatally attacked by a grizzly bear in the area. Of course, there are no more grizzlies in Sedona, but interesting bit of history nonetheless. There were very few people on the trail and the views were spectacular, which made it a very quiet, serene hike. Great place to meditate and enjoy the sounds of nature.
