Beautiful weather and cool temps—perfect for a mostly exposed hike like this. High winds could be a problem on this hike but on this day the breezes were refreshing. So cool that Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the classic “Treasure Island” honeymooned oh this mountainside in 1880 in an old abandoned miner’s cabin. The site is marked by a monument at the beginning of the hike. The tree cover breaks in the first mile when the single track trail ends, connecting on a fire road that you hike for the remaining 4 miles to the top. No signage near the top—just head for the highest peak with the multiple cell towers and a power building.
