I should have followed my gut on this hike. I did as much research as I could to help prepare for it and there wasn’t much to go on. The reviews that were available were pretty discouraging and although I maintained optimism it waned pretty quickly as the trailhead became harder to find. We met up with another hiker along the way that was struggling to navigate the trail as well and went further than we would have (mutually) b/c of each other’s support, I am comfortable with bouldering and scrambling, definitely recommend approach shoes and gloves for this hike, leave your poles b/c they are more of a hinderance than a help. One of my hiking partners waited out the rest of the hike as my other friend and I continued on, following cairns more than the rough path AllTrails recommended. We had a late start (0900) and an obligation to be in L.A. by 1900, so had to turn back at the bend to the summit sadly. Start early, plan on 7-10 hours, follow the wash and keep your eyes peeled for cairns. I really think there should be an alternative sixth peak for Las Vegas. This is my fourth peak challenge and I would rate this as the hardest peak I’ve done simply due to the challenge of navigating it. The scrambling and bouldering should not be discounted either, it is not for the faint of heart and you will find yourself questioning your approach on both the way up and down. Exercising caution adds time to this hike as well as navigating it. Again, I would hope the SocialHiker would consider an alternative 6th peak, this hike seems irresponsible to promote, especially in an inaugural year. I consider myself an experienced hiker and backpacker, but from the perspective of motivating other novice and intermediate hikers to get out and explore, this hike is not just a challenge but in a lot of ways setting people up to fail. Most of the reviews I could find, stated “did not summit/finish”, I was warned.

  1. Actually, there is lots of information on this route. My book “Hiking Las Vegas” has a route to Mt. Wilson and my website (same name) has four routes to Mt. Wilson, along with 400 additional routes all across the US.

  2. I’ll be doing this summit this weekend and will post a trail log with some images of landmarks to help with this summit.
