For the 3rd year in a row, we chose to hit both Ontario and Cucamonga on the same day and then spend the night on top of Cucamonga. Since it was midweek, we had Ontario all to ourselves and only one other group on top of Cucamonga. For our summit of Ontario we had left our big packs hidden off trail by the saddle and just went up with essentials. We then retrieved our big packs to hike to Cucamonga. Bugs were not a huge issue and the weather was good. However, the wind after we retired to our tents for sleep was fierce and loud and much stronger than had been predicted. The views were stunning especially the sunset and then the rise of the strawberry moon. The biggest challenge of doing this 2 peak hike with an overnight is the water carry. The last water is at Columbine spring which is a mile below Icehouse saddle. So, from that point, we were all fully loaded up with 4 liters of water. This was just enough to get through the ascent of the 2 peaks, dinner, breakfast and the descent. All in all, another great adventure in the mountains and I am sure we will repeat it again next year!
