Velociraptor Tries to Eat Observatory

So, driving out to the trailhead was interesting; upon looking up driving there, on Google there was a road closure noted that Santa Anita Road wasn't going to be back open until Jan 7. However, we pressed on, and part of the road leaving Chantry Flats was washed out, but we were able to make to the parking lot. The surprising thing about getting there at 7am was the amount of parking still available; didn't even have to fight for a spot!

The weather was awesome going up, but as with doing the hike the last time, the mile and a half section right after the campground was a pain. The last mile and half up wasn't as bad, but I felt worn out getting to the top after the prior section. Unfortunately, going on a Monday meant that the cafe up top was closed. Also there's an apparent leak with the water supply and signs stating not to drink the water.

Coming back down, we crossed the parking lot and got onto part of the trail that had burned and sprayed with fire retardant. The red/pink made for some interesting views. The part that was also a pain was the uphill part after spending 4+ miles descending.

Overall, it reminded me that I need to put in longer walks/runs to be in better shape for the next one, but it was a good hike to start off the new year. Cheers!

    1. Thanks Jeff! And thank you for putting this on; great motivation for training and meeting other hikers. My hiking buddy hikes with a monkey on her pack and I usually have my dinosaur. I’ll try getting a picture of them both on the next hike.
