As my title suggests, I didnt think about 6 pack challenge before I decided to hike Rose Peak. While I was doing research for this hike, I came across this challenge.

One of our friend's friend planned the hike. He has submitted Rose peak couple times before and is an avid hiker. 3 of us decided to tag along with him in spite if not being in a great condition and practice. I had to get a big one in for the year as I knew the rest of the year is possibly a wash out for me.

We began at 7am from Del Valle in Livermore. Followed the permit/map . The markers are placed very well and it's an easy trail to follow. Trail is in great condition. It's not too crowded. We saw some groups on and off. We carried about 4 liters of water but didnt use it all. There are couple water sources, streams on the way but you need filters.

The trail is quite steep in places and it took some toll on our knees and slowed us down significantly on our way back. Lot of gravel also made it a little slippery.

We did come across one rattle snake, waited it our until it decided to go back in the grass. We were lucky to see some patches of beautiful wild flowers! Not sure how long it will last though.

  1. Hi Smita, where did you park near Del Valle? All reports state gates open at 8am. We are planning this soon and wanted to plan accordingly as we are driving from South Bay. Thank you and congratulations for getting through this toughie!

  2. There are couple parking lots in Del Valle and the trail begins from there. I don’t think there is a gate as such as we were able to park there and begin our hike at 7am. All the best for your hike!
