Snowfields to cross – could be difficult

Unexpected weather change experience! Hiked from Sierra Madre where my hiking partner and I were too hot to wear any jacket, to putting on soft shell because it started pouring rain, and to finally wearing micro spikes with 4 layers of clothing and ski gloves due snow shower and storm.

It was beautiful hike as always but hiking from This trail has its own beauty. We could hear the streams and waterfall most of the time during the hike and we got to cross the streams twice going up. The trail itself was well maintained and not busy. We found it was not too difficult to climb. However the last 2 miles where the trail started to be covered by snow, the real challenge begun. We felt we moved slower than usual, the gusty wind with snow hitting our face was fun but we couldn’t see far enough and it was freezing ???? cold.

There was only 4 other hikers up on Mt Wilson when we got there. Both the cafe was still closed and as well as the observatory due to the weather condition. Mount Wilson was completely white with thick powdery snow it. It was simply stunning.

Because it was 1:45 pm already when we get there, we didn’t have time to explore or play selfie ???? in freezing temperature. No one wanted to take their gloves off. Where was my GoPro when I needed it?!  We simply used the ever lovely and clean ladies restroom, hide in there from the wind and snow for a moment, and hiked back down.

The micro spikes  really saved us from sliding on snow, icy or muddy trail and we thought it was a great investment ever.

We ended the hike at 6 pm and had the chance to use our headlight 2 miles before the trail ends. The city lights looks beautiful from the trail before first water and we ended this hike with a happy note that we safely got back down and fond memories of new hiking experience with 3 different weather changes in one day.

  1. AMAZING contrast between the photo lower in the sun, and near the top in the snow! Glad you had micro spikes. They are rarely needed on Mount Wilson, so consider yourself “lucky” to have experienced the snow! 🙂
