I went with 2 friends to Mt. Wilson. We started from Chantry Flats around 7:45 am. The weather at that time was sunny but cool.  We had planned to go straight to Mt. Wilson, however, I missed the fork in the trail and we ended up at Sturtevant Falls. It was a nice detour as the water was running pretty good. It was very pretty. It’s  a popular spot and there were a number of people taking selfies and family pictures. We took a few pictures while there. We looped back to the trail that goes to Mt. Wilson and passed numerous little falls in the creek. We made it to Sturtevant Camp where we went and looked inside the main lodge. It is brightly decorated and has informational pamphlets. You can also get oatmeal, coffee, and tea before you continue on with your trip. Most of the hike is tree covered so it stays relatively cool. There were some bugs flying around, but not a whole lot. We made our way to the switch backs, where we encountered a deer. The switchbacks are steep and go on for quite a distance. As you near the top, it opens up and there is a lot of sun. It got pretty warm. You get a nice view of Los Angeles and the other peaks. At the top, you can turn right and head to the observation for a really nice panoramic views of the area and the mountains. If you turn left you will pass by the observatory equipment and eventually get to the main area of the Mt Wilson observatory. There is a central area with a picnic table.  The observatory has 2 lenses, one with a 60 inch lens and another with a 100 inch lens. There is a museum as well. The Cosmic Cafe was closed for the season, but there are nice picnic tables you can sit at and relax and eat. We did an out and back. Watch the switchbacks because you can slip on the leaves or trip over a rock as you go down. It took us the entire day to go up and return back to The parking lot at Chantry Flats. We got to enjoy a nice sunset when we returned to the lot. It was an enjoyable hike and we had fun exploring.
