A fun fast hike but extremely popular, so if you can take a weekday off to avoid the weekend crowds that works best.  I've done this hike from both the Lake Poway trail head and from the Romona side off of Highway 67.  Doing the out and back from Lake Poway will gives you about a 7 mile trip.  When I do this from the Highway 67 trail head I always summit up the paved road but head back down towards Lake Poway but take a sharp right on the Fry-Koegel trail, which takes you down and around the front of the mountain.  Not many people use this path and it is a very nice hike back.
