We started at about 6:30am and about 1/4 of a mile in we saw a man running down hill and he had on a Six Pack of Peaks t-shirt! It was fun starting the day having seen someone else who was part of the challenge. Then we made it to the waterfall and due to how many people were there we continued on our way. We chose to take the steep way up which was perfect for us- it was nice having a leisurely trek down and getting the work out of the way early in the day. Also less incline on the way down was easier on our knees. When we got to the San Antonio ski hut we saw a rattle snake, at a safe distance, which was fun. The snake hung out the whole time we rested there, he must be used to the humans passing by. Then is was up the (steep) baldy bowl trail to the top. We found a spot, out of the wind, ate our traditional sandwiches then in the warmth of the sun and on the comfy stone(no sarcasm) had a nice nap. On the way down from the peak we took the devils backbone to the ski lifts. There were moments my peripheral vision experienced great amounts of parallax. I kept calling it the Lord of the Rings hike because in those movies they were always hiking along the side of steep mountain with only about a foot of flat surface area to hike on. It was great stopping at the notch ski lodge to go to the bathroom- its rare to get to go to the bathroom in a real building with running water mid hike. From there it was that fire road back to the waterfall. This time we stopped and got in. It was cool and just what the doctor ordered for my tired tootsies.
