Oy vey what a hike! Got to the trailhead around 545am and there were only a few cars. The Vivian creek lot is closed but if you make a left at the gate, there is a lot with plenty of parking. The first 1.5 miles were pretty steep to start off the hike but leveled out after that. There were plenty of areas with flat greenery but most of the hike was exposed with only sections of shade. Despite the weather calling for a hot day, the morning was very chilly and during sections of shade, my fingers went numb. Luckily it warmed up quickly and got super hot once you were fully exposed so a word of caution. Plenty of water sources along the way although that also came with a lot of bugs so bring bug spray. The switchbacks begin around mile 5 and you have your first view of the peak around mile 8. The final push for me began around 10500 ft (mile 9) which got very steep and with areas of loose rock. I had to stop and catch my breath a few times from the altitude. You do lose the trail around this point but keep angling up to the right and you’ll be fine. The views at the summit were nice but overall the views weren’t as rewarding as neighboring peaks like San Jacinto and San Bernardino. Also, if you check out the wind barricades at the summit, someone created a rock penis sculpture in one of them that provided a few chuckles and made the final push worth it lol. Finished the day around 430pm with 19.5 miles total. I had zero cell service for 95 percent of the hike and only drank 2L of water but I attribute that to the chilly start. Probably the toughest hike to date with that final mile really separating the weak from the strong. Can’t wait to do this one again. Happy hiking y’all!
