When it’s hot in Santa Clarita, we normally head up to Frazier Park to hike in cooler weather. So today was perfect to do that and get another peak for the pack, Sawmill Mountain. The Mountain Communities Chamber of Commerce has a peak challenge too. It’s called the 3,2,1 challenge and since Sawmill is apart of it, why not just do two other peaks while you are there? Starting from the parking lot of the Mt. Pinos Nordic Base, you head up two miles to Mt. Pinos (Iwihinmu) where the radio tower is, which is the highest point in Ventura County and the center of the Chumash universe. Then, you head down and up, the Vincent Tumamait Trail to Sawmill Mountain, which is the highest point in Kern County. It’s marked by a tower of rocks. Finally, you head out two more miles to Grouse mountain to complete the 3,2,2 challenge even though there seems to be two peaks with the Grouse mountain sign ????????‍♀️. Then, it’s 6 miles back to the parking lot to finish a beautiful day! You can submit your photos to the Chamber of Commerce for a certificate and you can buy a 321 challenge patch from their store. It was a great day to summit 3 peaks!
